10/29/17 - Trip to Chapel Hill
Yesterday (Saturday, the 28th), Taylor, Knox and I took a day trip to Chapel Hill to film for our 495 project. Brittany was unable to make the shoot due to her job, which is understandable. We were supposed to get an interview with Irina's high school English teacher and get some B-roll of the high school campus and maybe some other spots in Chapel Hill, but things did not entirely go to plan.
We all drove separate, which was fine because Taylor was from the area and was staying for the weekend anyways and I was staying with some friends that go to UNC, but no one bothered to tell me where I was supposed to be until less than a half hour before I was supposed to leave. What kind of film production does that? Even with some lesser organized sets that I've worked on in that end, they at least would give call sheets the night before where I had some time to plan. Nope, not here. All I knew was that we were going to Chapel Hill until right before I left.
Then the really frustrating thing happened. I had been driving for maybe two hours and had stopped at a Bojangles to get lunch, which I had time for because I was early. I only had about 40 minutes left in the drive to the place where we were meeting up to then go to the filming location. When I got there, I noticed a text from Taylor asking how far out I was. I texted him back and got something along the lines of (not exact words - purely paraphrasing) "I assume you know our interview cancelled" and "we're gonna get B-roll of the high school and stuff."
Wait...WHAT? Our interview cancelled?! Why am I coming up here then?! That was the only reason I was actually needed there! Why would I not be told about this until I am 40 MINUTES AWAY from the location?
At this point, I am wondering why I'm even needed right now. Without the interview, there is no point in having the Sound Mixer come along, but I'm just like "okay, well I'll be there in like 40 minutes" because I don't want to argue or cause a problem and I've already gone that far.
Fast forward to when we're all three at the location. Knox and Taylor go off to film around the high school campus, and I am just told "go around and record tones." RECORD TONES?! Why did I drive nearly 3 hours to record tones? I CAN DO THAT ANYWHERE! Could I really not record tones of the wind in Wilmington?
There was no reason whatsoever for me to be there! I could have been working on other projects that take up the rest of my time or just enjoying my weekend...literally anything besides driving three hours and wasting all that gas, money, and my weekend to record wind tones for 10 minutes.
Hoping for better things next weekend when we are supposed to go back to Charlotte to film.
