Update Blog - 9/17/17

Over the past week, my group and I have mainly been preparing for Pre-Production Presentation tomorrow (Monday, 9/18) and talking about when we might shoot more interviews and B-roll.

With the presentation, I put in the equipment I will be using on the film, which will be a H6n sound recorder, shotgun mic, boom pole, 2 lavaliere kits, headphones, XLR cables, and AA batteries. All the equipment will come from the equipment room except for the H6n in which I will be using my own. Next to the equipment was the stylistic approach I am going for with the sound of film, which is clear, consistent audio from the interviews and eerie atmosphere in the B-roll and just the film as a whole.

In addition, I made an entertaining suggestion for the target audience, but that (unfortunately for you) did not make it to the presentation.

As mentioned above, we have been thinking about when we can shoot more interviews and B-roll. Right now, we are considering going back to Charlotte the weekend of the 29th this month to get an interview and capture some more B-roll. This will be my first time on the set of the film and actually seeing the content that I am working on, so that is an experience I look forward to.

Small things have been going on this past week with our documentary. I know Knox and Taylor have both been working on getting more information and possible interview subjects. Taylor's been trying to get in contact with Irena's poetry group that she was heavily involved in. The interview footage and B-roll from the other weekend when we all went to Charlotte should be about ready to be presented in class This week has been a slower one in the progress of the film but productive nonetheless. Extensive Concept Research

Doing research for this project has honestly been kind of confusing for me. As the sound person on this documentary, I have not been doing any research on the mysterious death from 2008 that this film is about as I feel the subject matter in terms of just the information itself does not really pertain to me and my duties on this project very much. That is not to say the subject is meaningless to me in my process because it is important to fit the tone of the film and make everything flow as well as possible from an audio standpoint. A challenge here could be just my ignorance as to what this project really is and the full contents of the film. Blog Post 10/20/17 - My Thoughts on Doing Work Outside of My Position

Greetings! This week, we have been trying to reach out to more contacts to try securing more interview subjects. I was asked by the director (Knox) if I would help reaching out to two people who worked on a memorial for our documentary subject (Irena) in ALASKA (of all places). I complied, but it was more of me just wanting to help Knox manage all of this he's trying to do for the documentary, rather than actually wanting to do those kind of tasks. I managed to message the person who did artwork for the memorial, but I could not find any contact information for the person who actually headed up the memorial. For me, it is not laziness (or just not wanting to do it) that turns me off from wanting to do things for the project like reaching out to possible interview subjects. It annoys me to be asked to do such things because they are outside of what my job is. I am the Sound Mixer. I am the last person that should be reaching out to interview subjects.
