Greetings!

Pre-production has been going about the same since the last time I checked in here. I will go back through some of that here with some slight changes or additions.

We are still planning to shoot this upcoming weekend (September 29 - October 1)!

Some notes about that:
  • From my understanding, we should still be going over to Charlotte and maybe Durham.
  • This will be to hopefully shoot some interviews.
  • We will definitely be shooting B-roll, though. If the interviews fall through, we will still be able to get B-roll
  • B-roll will be ready to show in class October 2.
Again, this will be my first time getting to do production work on the film since joining the project, so that will be fun.

My approach to the sound work will still be the same. Clear, consistent audio on the interviews and eerie atmosphere with ambient noise and so on for the B-roll and the style of the movie as a whole. My curiosity now goes into what I would be doing while B-roll is being shot. Am I recording with their footage? Am I off recording my own stuff from a list of things the others want?  That is something I will have to think about as I get closer to shooting next weekend.

Since I apparently had to do crew evaluations last week instead of this week like I planned, I shall provide some small observations on my group members right here. It will not make up the grade, and that is fine, but I would still like to give my response of sorts to my group. Because I have only been working with them for threeish weeks, I cannot provide too detailed of feedback on these people, so this will be very simple and vague. It does not help that I was added to the group a few days before the first class.
  • Taylor seems to have an idea of what he wants to do with the cinematography of the documentary. I have not really talked to him much yet, so there is not a whole lot I can say.
  • Brittany is pretty nice and seems to have everything together. From what I hear from Knox, she is the anchor of the movie in her ability to bring everything together as the Producer and make Knox's vision a reality. Brittany's schedule that she's made on Google helps me so much with due dates because I have a hard time keeping up with the immense amount of stuff that Andre can require weekly.
  • Knox has been a good friend of mine for the last couple of years, so I can attest to how this guy works. I do not claim to be an expert on the subject of the movie. I consider myself the oblivious one of the group in my knowledge of the case. What I can say here is that Knox does seem to know what is going on and is really applying himself in his research, and when he is invested something or has something he wants or needs to do, he is all in 100%. From what I've seen from him so far on the project, that is how he is here, so I look forward to seeing where he goes with this doc.

Small things have been going on this past week with our documentary. I know Knox and Taylor have both been working on getting more information and possible interview subjects. Taylor's been trying to get in contact with Irena's poetry group that she was heavily involved in. The interview footage and B-roll from the other weekend when we all went to Charlotte should be about ready to be presented in class This week has been a slower one in the progress of the film but productive nonetheless. As for me, I have hard at work on other projects including a production schedule due on Tuesday for my Producing class, doing sound design for someone's 495 narrative project from last semester, a script for my tv writing class, maintaining the social media pages and website for Flicker Film Society, my FST 497 edit, my weekly podcast, and FST 376. Extensive Concept Research

Doing research for this project has honestly been kind of confusing for me. As the sound person on this documentary, I have not been doing any research on the mysterious death from 2008 that this film is about as I feel the subject matter in terms of just the information itself does not really pertain to me and my duties on this project very much. That is not to say the subject is meaningless to me in my process because it is important to fit the tone of the film and make everything flow as well as possible from an audio standpoint. A challenge here could be just my ignorance as to what this project really is and the full contents of the film. As someone who was added to the production team fairly recently, I do not have much knowledge pertaining to areas such as the concrete details of the death case, interview subjects, where the film is really even at, etc. I also have no idea yet as to the stylistic approach or direction that the director is really looking for, especially in my...

Blog Post 10/20/17 - My Thoughts on Doing Work Outside of My Position

Greetings! This week, we have been trying to reach out to more contacts to try securing more interview subjects. I was asked by the director (Knox) if I would help reaching out to two people who worked on a memorial for our documentary subject (Irena) in ALASKA (of all places). I complied, but it was more of me just wanting to help Knox manage all of this he's trying to do for the documentary, rather than actually wanting to do those kind of tasks. I managed to message the person who did artwork for the memorial, but I could not find any contact information for the person who actually headed up the memorial. For me, it is not laziness (or just not wanting to do it) that turns me off from wanting to do things for the project like reaching out to possible interview subjects. It annoys me to be asked to do such things because they are outside of what my job is. I am the Sound Mixer. I am the last person that should be reaching out to interview subjects.
